In 1973, a fledgling Toronto comedy troupe, desperate not to find itself still out of work by Christmas, proposed to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that CBC Radio's top priority be a new radio comedy show.

The show would star the troupe performing their own material in front of a live audience, accompanied by live sound effects.

And to round out the concept, the scripts would be written at the last minute and ignored anytime some good ad libs came up.

For some bizarre reason, CBC Radio went for it.

On Sunday, December 9, 1973, the Royal Canadian Air Farce broadcast its very first show. And the rest (to coin a phrase) is comedy.

Hearing Aid Repair (2:58) Come On Up (1:13)
Incompetent Typesetter (3:24) The Wrong Puzzle (4:58)
Oat Bran & Lobster Cereal (2:41) Prof Wombat's Vegetables (3:15)
Literary Holdup Note (5:09) Insurance Lovers (3:07)

There's a sketch here from that very first session, December 1973, with an audience of 160 people at the Curtain Club in Richmond Hill, Ontario. And there's one from as recently as April, 1993 with 2,400 people at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. In between, there's an incredibly wide range of comedy, recorded in theatres large and small, all across Canada.

Although the group is known for its topical humour and political satire, picking 20 favourites from teh past 20 years was no easy task: the face of politics - and the faces of politicians - have changed so often that Air Farce Radio has outlasted five Prime Ministers and six U.S. Presidents! As a result, this collection features comedy that's timeless, rather than timely. Whether you care about politics or not, you'll be sure to enjoy!
